1. The VLT (Very Large Telescope) is the world"s largest telescope and it is taking scientists further back to the Big Bang than they ever thought possible. In other words, the VLT is a kind of a time machine, giving astronomers detailed views of events that took place in the earliest days of the cosmos. One day, we will have a much clearer picture of how our planet was born.

  1. The latest development in the debate amongst scientists about what killed the prehistoric dinosaurs is the suggestion that acid rain was the cause. Some geologists suggest that a large meteor hitting the earth at 65 kilometres per second would have led to strongly acidic rain falling all over the world. This idea is fascinating but it would mean the dinosaurs would all have died within a very short time.
  2. In 1948, a British farmer discovered an interesting lump of metal while ploughing his field. At first he thought the metal bits were parts of an old bed. Then more "parts of old beds" turned up and the farmer took them to the local museum. "But these bits are priceless!" exclaimed the keeper of the museum. "They are Iron Age jewellery and coins!" Over the next 40 years, more and more items were found in the same field.
  3. Rats may have had a bit of a hard time over the years but these days lots of people are forgetting about guinea-pigs and hamsters and are buying rats instead. Domestic rats aren"t the same as the ones that run around rubbish bins - they"re actually quite cute. They are very intelligent and can be trained like dogs. They come in different colours and- a big bonus- they will eat anything!
  4. In Western cultures, people look each other in the eye during a conversation to show interest and trust, but in many Asian countries, it"s rude to look people in the eye, especially a superior such as a teacher. One of the most basic and powerful signals is when a person crosses his or her arms across the chest. This can indicate that a person is putting up an unconscious barrier between themselves and others.
  5. Earthquakes happen all the time in all parts of the world but we don"t notice most of them because they are small. However, big earthquakes are really dangerous. They can make buildings fall down, set off landslides and do other deadly things. The highest death toll caused by an earthquake was in China in 1556, when at least 830,000 people died.
  6. According to scientists, Americans watch more TV on average than any other nationality. In fact, many people, particularly children, sit for 35 hours or more per week glued to the box. What"s wrong with watching all that TV? Studies have linked it to everything from obesity to aggression in children not to mention that it puts your mind into a sort of sedated state. Habitual television watching, over long periods of time, has been known to cause depression, and anger.

Young sculptor 4 Suzy Jordan is fast developing an international reputation for her beautifully-crafted figures which are made from a mixture of clay and metal. People love dancers, particularly ballet dancers, and Suzy has a fascination for them too. U I used to long to be a dancer when I was younger," she says. "There"s something amazing about all those graceful movements that, unknown to the audience, can be so painful for the dancers. I"m glad I didn"t go in for it, but just watching them gives me so many ideas/

Suzy has been in touch with some leading ballet companies to see if they"ll allow her to sit and draw their dancers during rehearsal time. Her dream is to join forces with them, do a series of life-size sculptures and then hold an exhibition in the foyer of the theatre where the dancers perform.

Most of her sculpture is of figures. Tf I get the chance to sculpt from life, it"s really great because I can work more quickly and I"m not guessing shapes or turning to reference books," she told us. But most of her work has to be done from drawings. After graduating from Art School, Suzy taught drawing for a number of years before setting up as a sculptor, so at least she has the necessary skills.

Most of Suzy"s works are individually commissioned, one piece can take as long as four or five months to complete. All of the work is done in a small shed in the garden of her family home in the country. This tiny space, about 3 square metres, contains her main worktop, plus all her other gear. Suzy uses terracotta clay to her sculptures and applies a mixture of lacquer and crushed metal powder, usually bronze, on top. This makes her pieces less expensive than solid bronze figures would be. She then adds a layer of resin or wax to give her work an aged look.

One of Suzy"s biggest commissions came from a school in Sweden. They wanted three specially-designed life-size figures to suspend from the ceiling in their gymnasium. Hard to imagine how she did it, but each one was made in her garden shed. They had to be made of plaster so that they wouldn"t be too heavy to hang up. Suzy travelled to Sweden with the sculptures to help direct their installation. One of the drawbacks of working to commissions rather than on mass produced pieces is having to work out what sort of price to charge, i used to be such a softie," she confides. 4f someone fell in love with something I"d made, I"d accept a lower offer or let them pay for it in instalments, just >o that it went to a good home. But I"ve learnt not to do that anymore."

Suzy"s work starts at around £100 for the smallest figures, but large sculptures can cost as much as £3000 each. But as she

doesn"t make copies of her work, each person has an original, so they must be worth having as an investment. As she explains, "All artists want some kind of recognition for their work. 1 don"t think many of us do it for the money. I have a friend who says she can"t wait to see my work in ten years and see how it"s progressed. I"m very lucky to be doing the sort of work where that kind of progression shows."

When Suzy speaks about dancers, she feels

  1. upset by how much they suffer.
  2. inspired by the way they move.
  3. sad that she didn"t train to be one.
  4. impressed by how they react to audiences.
Suzy has contacted certain ballet companies because she"d like to
  1. find a job in a theatre.
  2. sell sculptures to them.
  3. be invited to performances.
  4. co-operate in a joint project.
Suzy would prefer not to work from drawings because
  1. it takes a long time to do.
  2. books advise against it.
  3. she"s not good at drawing.
  4. she"d like to develop new skills.
In paragraph 4 a "worktop" is
  1. a type of building.
  2. a piece of equipment.
  3. a surface to work on.
  4. an article of clothing.
Suzy does not make her figures wholly from metal because
  1. they would look too new.
  2. they would cost too much.
  3. it would make them too heavy.
  4. it would require more space.
Suzy"s attitude towards her work has changed because
  1. she now produces larger quantities.
  2. she now only works to commission.
  3. she no longer has problems selling it.
  4. she has become more businesslike.

Suzy finds her work satisfying because

  1. each piece is unique.
  2. she makes a good living.
  3. people appreciate what she does.
  4. her work is rising in value.

Russian cuisine, healthy and delicious, pancakes and cabbage soup called shchi, pancakes

Dear Stuart, (можно без запятой)

Thank you for your letter. I was very happy to hear from you again.

In your letter you asked me some questions about the food I like (или the cuisine I prefer) and now I"m ready to answer them.

I prefer Russian national cuisine because it"s healthy and delicious.

As for my favorite dishes, I love pancakes and cabbage soup called shchi.

Unfortunately, I can"t cook very well. I can only fry potatoes and make a sandwich.

I can cook pancakes very well. Also I can fry potatoes.

I can"t cook at all.

Now I want to ask you some questions about the cooking camp.

А можно просто использовать союз by the way перед первым вопросом. Например, Ву the way, where is the camp located?

Where is it located? What facilities has it got? Is it a popular among teenagers? How big is the camp?

Who recommended the camp to you? How long are you planning to spend there?

Now I want to ask you some questions about the cooking camp. Where is it located? What facilities has it got? How big is the camp?

Write back soon.

Best wishes,

Misha

Thank you for your letter. I was very happy to hear from you again.

In your letter you asked me some questions about the food I like and now I"m ready to answer them. I prefer Russian national cuisine because it"s healthy and delicious. As for my favorite dishes, I love pancakes and cabbage soup called shchi. Unfortunately, I can"t cook very well. I can only fry potatoes and make a sandwich.

Now I want to ask you some questions about the cooking camp. Where is it located? What facilities has it got? How big is the camp?

Write back soon.
Best wishes,
Misha

В письме есть слова-связки (and, because, as for), и они уместно использованы.

Playing videogames is a complete waste of time» .

Introduction
Theme: playing videogames. Opinion 1: a waste of time. Opinion 2: a useful activity
Nowadays, become popular, useless, leisure-time activity, a lot of benefits
Think, believe

2 (my opinion and arg)
Opinion: disagree (it is useful), arg 1: entertaining, reason: good plots, arg 2: helps make friends, statistics: popular activity
Can hardly be called, gripping, good for uplifting, socialize, the majority of
In my opinion, firstly, this is because, secondly, according to statistics

3 (opposing opinion+arg)
Opinion: absolutely useless. Arg: not educational. Example: shooting, chasing
A way to kill time, do not do any good, do not lead to developing skills
However, other people are convinced, they say, because

4 (explain why we disagree)
Arg: a lot of games, which teach players take decisions, coordinate their actions, consider possible solutions to the problem
A lot of upsides, come in handy
Nevertheless, I still argue, for instance

5 (conclusion)
My opinion
Approve of, not only …, but also, amusing, exciting
In conclusion, although, I am still in favour

Nowadays playing videogames is becoming a popular leisure-time activity. Some people think that it is a useless way to spend free time. Others believe that this hobby has got a lot of benefits.

In my opinion, videogames are worth playing. Firstly, they are very entertaining and can be used for uplifting. This is because their plots are often gripping and one cannot help feeling amused playing them. Secondly, this activity helps people socialize. According to statistics, videogames are enjoyed by the majority of teenagers, which means that adolescents can easily make friends among those who share their interest.

However, other people are convinced that playing videogames is just a way to kill time. They say that videogames are not educational and do not do any good because most games are based on chasing or shooting which do not lead to developing any useful skills.

Nevertheless, I still argue that videogames have got a lot of upsides. Plenty of modern videogames help develop different skills which will come in handy in real-life situations. For instance, one can practise taking decisions in stressful situations, or coordinating their actions with actions of other players, or considering possible solutions to various problems which they face in games.

In conclusion, although there are people who do not approve of playing videogames, I am still in favour of this pastime activity. Not only are they highly amusing and exciting but also make people more skillful in certain spheres.

Moscow
Russia

Dear Tim,
Dear Rebecca,

Thanks (a lot) for your (last) letter.
Your last letter was a real surprise.
I was glad to get your letter.
It was great to hear from you! / It was great to hear that… / I was happy to hear…

Sorry I haven’t written for so long but …/ Sorry I haven’t been in touch for so long.
I"m sorry I haven"t answered earlier but I was really busy with my school.

I’m glad you passed your History test!
Sounds like you had a great time in London!
Great news about your…!

Предполагается, что письмо должно быть написано в неформальном стиле, поэтому вы можете использовать неформальные слова-связки, такие как well , by the way , anyway , so , разговорные выражения типа Guess what? Или Wish me luck!

Well, I’d better go now as I have to do my homework.
Anyway, I have to go now because my Mum asked me to help her with the washing up.
I’ve got to go now! It’s time for my favourite TV show.

Write (back) soon!
Take care and keep in touch!
Drop me a letter when you can.
Hope to hear from you soon.
I can’t wait to hear from you!

1) Love,
2) Lots of love,
3) All my love,
4) All the best,
5) Best wishes,
6) With best wishes,
7) Yours,

Kate

You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen-friend Mary who writes

... It was great to hear that you went to Italy during your spring holidays. I have always wanted to visit this wonderful country. Did you enjoy your journey? What places of interest did you visit? What impressed you most of all? Did you like your hotel?

Write a letter to Mary.
In your letter
tell her about your journey to Italy
ask 3 questions about her plans for the summer

Dear Mary,
Thanks a lot for your letter. I hope you passed all your tests!
First of all, let me tell you about my one-week package holiday to Rome. Everything was OK, but we didn’t like our hotel. It was too noisy and the food was awful. We even had a stomachache and consulted a doctor. However, all the excursions were extremely interesting. We visited the Vatican and were impressed by the famous St. Peter’s Cathedral. I also enjoyed the Colosseum and other sights of Rome. All in all, we enjoyed our holiday.
And what about you? What are your plans for the summer? Will you come to visit us? Russia is a unique country and I’ll show you lots of interesting things. If you make up your mind, let me know what cities you would like to visit.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Lots of love,
Lucy

...Do you often have arguments with your parents? I do. My mother thinks that I spend too much time hanging around with my friends. Do you often meet your friends?

Write back soon.
Love,
Ann

Write back to Ann.
In your letter

Dear Ann,
Thanks for your letter. I’m glad you passed your History test!
I’m sorry you don’t get on well with your parents. As for me, I have practically no problems with mine, although we do quarrel sometimes because I spend too much time playing computer games. In this case I try to talk to them and find the way out. Unfortunately, I can meet my friends only at weekends and we usually play football together. It’s our favourite game.
And how do you get on with your sister? Do you play together? Do you help her with her homework? I wish I had a sister or a brother!
Anyway, keep smiling whatever happens! I’d better go now as I’ve got loads of homework to do (as always).
Write back soon!
Lots of love,
Kate

Dear Emily,
Thank you for your letter. It was great to hear about your new house!
As for my new school, it’s very big! It has three computer rooms and wonderful sports facilities. Actually, it seems a nice place and I enjoy studying there. The kids in my class are very friendly. I’ve already made some new friends and we often meet after classes. I’ve got only one new subject this year. It’s Economics and I’m beginning to think that it’s not difficult, after all!
By the way, what music styles do you enjoy? Have you got any favourite bands? Would you like to go to their concert? As for me, I prefer Radiohead. They are cool!
I’d better go now. Mum wants me to help with the housework. Take care and stay in touch!
Lots of love,
Ann

Dear Harry,
Hi! How’s it going? Thanks for your last letter. I’m glad you are in your school football team now!
In your letter you asked me about football. Well, I’m really fond of it. It’s a great game and I’m always happy when my team wins. But I don’t watch football matches on TV because it’s rather boring. I prefer playing to watching as it’s more exciting. I’m also keen on roller-skating. It’s fun to take part in street competitions and to perform different tricks.
Anyway, what about your preparation for the National Championship? Do you work hard? How many times a week do you train? Do you get on well with your team-mates?
Well, I’d better go now as I have to tidy up my room. Write back soon!
All the best,
Ivan

Thanks a lot for your letter. Sounds like you had a great time in London! What impressed you most of all? Did you take any pictures? Were you tired?
I’m glad I can help you with your project on famous singers. Well, my favourite singer is Dima Bilan. He made his debut at the festival ‘New Wave’ in 2002 so he has already been singing for 10 years. Now Dima is a famous pop singer known for his songs like ‘Never Let You Go’ and ‘Believe’. I enjoy his songs because of his beautiful voice. Un-fortunately, I’ve never been to his concerts but I’d love to.
Anyway, let me know if you have any other questions. I’d better go now as I have to take my dog for a walk. Write soon!
Yours,

This is part of a letter from your English-speaking pen-friend.

...So you see that I enjoy films based on true historic facts whereas most of my friends are fond of soap operas. Do you agree that soaps don’t show life realistically? What kind of films do you like watching? Do you prefer watching films in the cinema or at home? Why?

answer her questions
ask 3 questions about her family

Dear Tina,
Thanks for your letter. I’m glad you liked the postcard I sent you!
In your letter you asked me about my attitude to soaps. Well, I agree that soaps don’t show life realistically because their plots are rather unbelievable and all emotions are exaggerated. As for me, I prefer whodunits, which keep me in suspense till the very end. I usually watch films at home but I never miss a chance to go to the cinema with friends. It’s much more exciting to watch films together.
I miss you greatly! Write back soon and tell me all your latest news. How is your sister? Has she passed her driving test? And what about your mother? Has she got over the flu?
I’d better go now as I promised mum to help her with the washing.
Love,
Ann

Oh, yeah. I wanted to ask you something. We have to write a report on technology for school. Could you tell me a few things about how you use technology in your life? In your letter

Dear Rob,
It was great to hear from you! I’m glad you managed to talk to Sam. Please give my best regards to him.
You asked me about technology. Well, I’ve got a new mobile. It’s got a camera so I’m taking lots of pictures at the moment. I’ve also got a computer but I use it mainly for surfing the Net. Of course we’ve got things like a TV, a DVD player and a music centre. My parents usually watch TV whereas my brother spends hours playing computer games.
Anyway, I’m glad you’ve made such progress in chess. Is it difficult to learn how to play it? Will I be able to do it on my own? How can I get started?
I’ve got to go now as I’m helping my Dad in the garage.
All the best,
Andrew

In your letter you asked me about the life in a big city. As for me, I enjoy living in Moscow as there are lots of parks and cosy cafes, museums and galleries. In the evenings I usually go for a walk with my friends and at the weekend we go to the theatre or visit a museum. Have you got any museums in your town? Are they free for students? Are there any sports facilities?
I’d better go now as I’ve got to do my homework - boring! Can’t wait to see you!
Lots of love,
Rita

...I find it a bit difficult to understand English grammar. What about you? Do you do grammar exercises? Do you think that it’s necessary to remember all grammar rules?
Have you got any plans for the summer? I was thinking of going to a language school in the UK to improve my English. It would be a lot more fun if we went together. What do you think?

Thanks for your letter. I’m glad your arm is out of plaster now!
I agree with you that English grammar is rather difficult so I think it’s necessary to learn grammar rules and to do exercises. As for me, I do it on a regular basis.
Going to a language school together is a great idea! We could practise our English and visit lots of places of interest. I’m absolutely free this summer so I can go whenever you like.
Write and tell me what dates suit you best. Which course would you like to do? What level do you think we are? Where would you prefer to stay? Meanwhile, I’ll make some enquiries about language schools in the UK. I’ll get in touch soon. I hope it all works out!

Helen

Dear Adam,

Well, we’ve obviously got a lot in common. I’m also crazy about rock music and my favourite band is Radiohead, too! I’ve never done skateboarding, though, but I’d love to try. I enjoy basketball and I love playing computer games. Do you?
I’m a bit worried about the language school. Is it far from your house? Should I bring any books with me? Will I have to do much homework? If I have, I’m afraid I’ll be busy in the evenings. Actually, I wouldn’t mind any activity. It will be fun just to be in another country.
Anyway, I know we’re going to be really good friends. Please write back soon.
All the best,
Sasha
